Tadao Ando

Born on the 13th of September, 1941. He is a Japanese self-taught architect.

He blends raw materials, water and natural light together, guided by nature,

embodying his unique spatial sense, merging both principles of Japanese tradition with Western modernism.

Ando’s works, often described as Haiku-esque, and linked with the ideology of Zen in Buddhism,

ensuring viewers to embrace every detail of the building structure and its surroundings as a whole,

offering a platform to understand which we belong physically and mentally,

bringing to us spiritual satisfaction, awe and intimacy of beauty.

. This allow viewers to rediscover those subconscious elements that offer emotional provocations.

讓堅硬的工業混凝土、柔和的花朵和翻滾的雲之間,建立了張力和懸念;

THE OVAL Benesse House Hotel / Naoshima, Japan

1995

Located upon high ground, overlooking the Seto Inland Sea,

this composition of exposed concrete, joined with a tranquil pool, and an open ceiling,

allow natural light to cascade from above, witnessing seasonal changes.

He never fails to “Represent the coexistence of nature, art and architecture”.

Under the influence of architectural masters for example Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn,

Ando chose to experiment with  readily available concrete.

This lent architecture a sense of emptiness, yet also depth and significance it enticed,

inspiring people to draw inspiration from everything they find.

The beauty in silence and the power in simplicity, offer guests and viewers both sensational and bodily experience,

between hard industrial concrete, gentle blossoms, and rolling clouds,

a tension and suspense between security and meditativeness interconnected.

This hotel places strangers and passersby in a space oppressive yet serene,

“to establish a rich and rewarding relationship between people and the built environment within which we exist”,

showing the humanity invested within the design aesthetic and function.

Ando's perception of the site, shaped his decision on the architectural language,

in relation, how would viewers' perception define what they see?

Circular Pavillion

Using 'the Oval' as blueprint, I appreciate the coexistence of nature and architecture,

providing larger space for air and light to pass through.

Offering a relaxed place for humans to interact with nature, thus slow down their pace of life.
